Alphabeat "Fascination"

The Skinny: The purest of pure in Danish Euro-pop, make that ANY pop on the scene today.

The Fat: I don't have a tv. I don't get a chance to watch MTV due to this fact. It doesn't bother me because nowadays there are scant showings of videos anyway. When I get a taste of satellite tv though I go to the obscure MTV stations and as well as other music channels in the 500 range. Always mental notes are being made to get this song or that song. I have found some amazing ones doing just this. And mind you seeing these channels happens maybe once or twice a year.

Alphabeat is one of those success stories. It doesn't get any better than this as far as perfect pop songs go. They are from Denmark and debuted this song in 2008. What is it with Denmark and all excellence in making pop gold. Maybe it is due to the fact that it is constantly voted the happiest nation on earth. You don't hear folks from Iraq making this sugary ear candy. Also take note that the new YoBigBro is very close on the horizon,,,,,,,,,

Liars "Scarecrows on a Killer Slant"

Short Version: Unnerving and frantic song where violence IS the answer.

Long Version: Back to the alleys. This week's song will pick up the pace if so needed. Liars are based out of Brooklyn (who isn't nowadays?), and happen to be associated with possibly the best title of an album ever: "They were wrong, So we drowned." One of the members used to play in a band called Urethra Franklin. Wow. This song soundtracks the feeling one gets when walking down an endless dark alley with a group of creeps in full pursuit. Best start running boy. Get GET!

Teamm Jordan "Stadium"

Short Version: Chill-wave getting you ready for the school year.

Long Version: This was one of the toughest weeks for choosing a song. There are numerous worthy songs that I have on repeat currently, but a majority of them are for different seasons in the calendar. Primarily winter. So note that the future is bright. "Stadium" is one of these songs that is on constant rotation! I don't know much, take that back, I don't know anything about Teamm Jordan except that two beat masters united to make this mid-80s style track. It is simple yet complete. Enjoy the chillaxation.

When Saints Go Machine "Whoever Made You Stand So Still"

Short Version: Fairies fly around the forest, and mermaids comb their hair by the lagoon to this song.

Long Version: I don't know where I found this song and I don't care. I am loving it! I cannot stop playing it. My only complaint is that it isn't long enough. Antony Hegarty (check out his full time band Antony and the Johnsons) does the guest vocals on this track. His voice in itself is worth a unique posting. It commands no competition in originality. And his vocalizing here is my favorite of anything he has ever sang. His normal style is described as dark cabaret, so it is refreshing to hear his vocals put to use on a more wishful track.
When Saints Go Machine is my new favorite band name. It could pass for a Scandinavian Black Metal band. They are a Danish group hailing from Copenhagen. They are not the first great band to come out of Denmark and they won't be the last. I hope you all enjoy this song as much as I do. Leave a comment if you do or don't.

BONUS: Concert review
This week I saw two shows. The first was Kurt Vile and the Violators at the Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street in DC. We were going to get a bite to eat in my neck of the woods and overheard someone say that they were heading to the show. This was news to us so we raced over by bus and cab only to find that it was sold out. We worked the line hard to see if we could get in with no success. Eventually the guy who was next to us the whole time and smoking a cigarette asked how many tickets we needed. We replied just two. He was in the first band that went on and went to see if he could get us on the guest list. He did! Bonus!! He was in the first band called True Widow. Thank you Dan. Once Kurt started we couldn't help but think of a younger Dylan. You could understand him but barely. He also didn't need a backing band, but they added depth to this sound. Every song sounded solid and about the same (which is good if you like a particular artist), but the highlight was definitely "He's Alright." A fan favorite and also appeared in the last scene of the second season of the HBO comedy "Eastbound and Down." We booked out after that and counted crazies on the DC bus at midnight.

On Friday night we traversed to Merriweather Post Pavillion to see Neko Case and headliner My Morning Jacket. It was my 6th time seeing MMJ and in my 6th different state (KY, NC, Maine, CA, Mass, and now MD). We sat in the lawn and took it easy. Neko was decent, but she didn't play the songs I wanted. I saw her before in a much more intimate setting which beats the type of setting. MMJ was very solid and had great energy for the 3/4 full amphitheater. The highlight for us was hearing their new track "The Day is Coming" which was posted on this site a few months ago. Best amphitheater aside from Red Rocks that I have ever been to. Lots of trees and art throughout. Trivia: This was the only location where The Who and Led Zeppelin shared the bill for a show. WOW!!!

Cass McCombs "County Line"

Short Version: Slow burning summer jam for drinking lemonade to on your front porch at dusk.

Long Version: This past weekend I traveled to the Midwest. From the airport I looked forward to a two hour drive through across land covered in corn fields. My sole requirement for cars I rent is that they include an auxiliary jack for my ipod. With this luxury option I put to use the playlist of songs I have downloaded in the past few months that I haven't listened to yet. This drive would determine which songs I kept and which would be lost to the delete button. One of the nice results of doing this includes discovering amazing tracks. I found about four songs that are YoBigBro worthy. Yet this song made the final cut.
Cass McCombs is a California boy who has done his share of road trips across the nation. That is evident from his history of living on both coasts and images from the video below. When this tune came on during my drive, I about chalked it up for the trash bin, but something about it grabbed me. It feels like an old Jackson Brown song from the late 70's. The organ in the background, mixed with the vocals confirm this. Playing on an AM station would only add character to the track. If you want to slow dance to your honey in the kitchen tonight before dinner, try doing it to "County Line."

Nadastrom "Save Us"

Short Version: A new type of party music, straight outta DC.

Long Version:  Moombahton:  a genre of electronic music that melds together reggaeton and Dutch style house down to 108 beats per min.  The first song of this new genre was titled "Moomba."  Hence the name.  I recently read about this new style and decided to research a few songs.  Word on the street is that this movement is taking off like wild fire.  Play one of these tracks at your party and its gets live in a hurry.
The reason I chose a Nadastrom song is b/c they are the parents of this musical child.  It was a friend's party where these two District Gentlemen debuted their first take.  How much hype will this fad garner?  It is hard to tell, but in the present it is just what any gathering could use to help survive, or better yet enhance the heat wave.
